Clients vat certificates under MTD

Didn't find your answer?

Search AccountingWEB

OK so we are now all signed up for mtd for vat (except 2 clients left).  How do we find our clients vat certificates under MTD?  Cant see anything through the new ASA and its disappeared via the old portal.  Any suggestions as this is something that clients often request?  Usually we just log into the old portal and print off a copy of the vat certificate.

As far as I know you can't. People have advised previously to download it prior to switching over. Not sure what you can do now, but I fear it's lost in the ether

Business tax account previous periods or wait for the June update I’m told by Hmrc . You must be mad signing your clients up now before you see what others do . I’m up for a block exemption as mine are all manual and find it impossible to comply as it stands .

Wow you are mad keen!

AFAIK you simply wont be able to get a VAT cert self serve, and will need to write to the VAT office old school style.

The price of volunteering way ahead of time!

The date of registration is a key piece of information for some online authorisations. Hence it is probably a security measure to make it impossible to get this via the gateway.

In particular the Agents API requires the date of registration to issue an invitation to appoint an agent.
(for VAT)

Trouble is - most clients never keep a copy of the registration form, nor have any clue how and where to find it.

It is the certificate from HMRC that is key. I printed to PDF my most recent VAT registration when it went through. I have just checked one of my accounts (all of which are MTD) and I cannot find those details on the gateway.

I don't know for certain that it is a security mechanism, but I do know for certain that it is one of the key pieces of information that can be used to establish an agent-client relationship.

In essence for someone to appoint an accountant as an agent the client needs access to their gateway account and to provide the agent with the date of registration. It would be a bit silly to just enable this to happen with access to the gateway account which is why I think it is a security mechanism. I presume the idea is to keep some things offline.

They also need the Box 5 figure from the return. It is no mean feat becoming an online agent for VAT.

It is ok since by the time we have registered all our clients for MTD we will have all their government gateway logins so can download the certificate ourselves, so not very secure.

You can call HMRC for the registration but I think you need a 64-8, so back to paper.

Thats for being registered by HMRC as an Agent. The Agent API is a system for agents to enable clients to appoint them as their agent using an API. I have posted about it before in some detail.

That only requires the registration date.

Just to save you the wait, GHarr has applied for exemption as an agent, which doesn't exist and won't be granted. Exemption is granted to those taxpayers who can't comply for one reason or another and should be applied for, and may be granted, on a case by case basis.

"Block Exemption" is something he's made up.

We have already printed off copies before starting the MTD process however we do have on occasions clients telephoning us wanting copies of their vat certificates because they have new contracts and this is a pre requisite.
