Depends on use and budget but at the bottom end you could install something like team viewer or logmein on the PC at the office and log into that remotely,  There are now apps for iphone, Ipad etc so pretty flexible but as mentioned it depends on what you plan to do with it and what speed you need.

Proof of Concept

Disclosure: I am the Business Development Manager at MIS

We offer a free of charge ‘proof of concept’ on software that you are looking to host.  This has the benefit of testing your current applications, before committing to the ‘cloud’.

As part of the implementation process, we run the on-site and hosted application in parallel.

BTC Hosting

Hi Craig

By all means drop me a line - we have people using BTC right now on our hosted desktop platform. It works great and is very fast. You can then access this software through any PC and/or iPad whenever you wish, subject to some form of internet connection.

Thanks

Dropbox

Hi ... I know this isn't directly what you are asking for, but the way I get round the problem with VT & Tax Calc is saving all my Data files in Dropbox (which also acts as a back up) and I have copies of VT & Tax Calc installed on my Office PC, Home PC and Laptop.

The only limitation with this method is you won't be able to access the files from a iPad or client's computer - but on the odd occasion I need to do this, I use Logmein to access my office pc.

Re Dropbox

Hi Craig,

As you will see from the above there are a range of options open to you. However I'm afraid BigBadWolf's suggestion of Dropbox is best avoided. It may work fine for simple file sharing but not for any system like PM Solution with a central database.

Good luck with your search - I hope you find an appropriate solution.

Apologies, I am not familiar with the file structure used by BTC - and if it is a shared database then it may not work very well.

It works well with VT as each company is a single data file (provided you don't have multiple users to access the same file at the same time)  - and in Tax Calac each Tax return is a separate data file so it does work very well.

Re Hosted Desktop

Hi Craig

We use Hosted Accountants to host four desktops.  We run both BTC and VT as well as sage on those desktops.  It was reasonably straight forward to set up and the staff there are helpful so I would recommend them to you.  Their servers are in the UK which is best for data protection purposes. We decided not to replace our in house server and to go this route instead mainly for the flexibility of being able to work from anywhere with an internet connection.

On the whole it works very well and speed is good.  At times it can run a little slow and you get the odd connection problem which Hosted Accountants sort out quickly.  However I would say that on balance those problems are a minor inconvenience and have to be balanced against the amount of time I wasted keeping the in house server maintained. You will still need a backup solution and we backup locally to the old server so that we can recover quickly if we need to.  You can't backup the BTC database whilst its being used so our backup runs overnight.

You will need a way of moving files from your local PC to the hosted system (for scanned documents etc) so we just set up a dropbox account which we all share and drop the files in locally and recover them on the hosted desktop.

The hosted desktop maps a route to the local printers attached to any computer you are working at so you can print locally from anywhere as well.

You are welcome to phone me to discuss if you would like.

Hosted Desktop UK

Hi Craig,

We have been using Hosted Desktop UK for our hosting desktop solution. I moved from another hosted desktop supplier due to reliability issues. I am mainly running the Digita suite.

The migration was painless and the Hosted Desktop UK support team bend over backwards to help you. They are prompt, courteous and helpful.

We have not experienced the issues mentioned by Jaine Best with her supplier, for example cut & paste between local PC and hosted desktop is possible for us. You can even just drag and drop. Scanning to the Hosted Desktop is possible too.

Backing up is no longer an issue either - all data and software is backed up automatically by Hosted Desktop UK.

I have had no connection issues or problems. I can connect from my Office PC, laptop and tablet - it just works

I have no affiliation with Hosted Desktop UK, apart from being a very happy customer. They have proven to be a very easy Company to work with..

They just do what they say they will do! I have no hesitation in recommending them.

Mark

Hosting supplier

Craig,

If you are looking at providers consider www.systemHOST.co.uk .  I run a small accountancy practice and have been hosted from the start QuicKBooks, SAGE Winforecast, VT Final Accounts and probably BTC from the end of this month (yes, Andrew nearly made a decision!).

I have known them from when I was in fulltime work in London in 2006, so they are well established, based in the UK, own their own data centre, are ISO accredited (if that is a concern) and profitable.

Chris
