Companies House

Companies House

Does anyone have any idea what Document examination do (or not). I have just looked at three different companies ( common director) for the past three years. The accounts were filed in paper version and there were no comparative figures on the balance sheets. All companies appear to be audit exempt. We shall be writing formally to Companies House

Document examiners at CH are useless.

I have seen the most ridiculous 'home made' accounts being passed by CH, including such things as non-balancing balance sheets, notes completely omitted, and accumulated p&l totals not agreeing between the b/s and p&l. The only thing they seem capable of noticing is accounts not casting correctly.

Its not Co House job...

They are just an information collecting system. HMRC will check if under enquiry.

Eh? Of course it's CH's job. HMRC are not responsible....

...at all for checking whether accounts comply with company law.

Information

But in my opinion it should be their job. They should as a minimum, in the public interest, reject acounts with obvious errors such as not balancing or not adding up.

Agreed it should be John but....

... when I asked them a few years ago as to what filing errors they found they said nothing about accounts.

See here...Companies House filing errors - check and check again.

I would suggest that their software isnt geared up for looking and comparing accounts.

Look at the article Rob wrote last July Accountingweb quizzes Companies House

https://www.accountingweb.co.uk/article/accountingweb-quizzes-companies-house-ceo/584273

after he interviewed the CEO of Companies House - no where does it say anything about comparing figures etc. It says:

We support the economy by providing data and allowing people to make decisions',

'Ultimately we’re in a world of digital data, getting data in and making data available'.

Yes but to state the obvious they should not just be passive recipients of duff data. Any pride they take in making data widely available is misplaced if the data is duff.

Quite amazing that they will allow accounts that don't add up or balance but will reject them if the company name includes "Ltd." instead of "Limited" or vice versa.

Couldn't agree more

Exactly - that's the point that those who run Companies House are missing (presumably because they are not accountants).
