Conflict between Companies Act & GDPR

UK company has redacted addresses from its Register of Members citing GDPR.

As a member of a limited company incorporated in England & Wales, I gave notice to inspect the Register of Members which is maintained by a firm of Chartered Accountants.  The accountants gave me photocopies of the register showing only full names and dates becoming and ceasing to be a member.  They told me that addresses and dates of birth had been redacted, citing GDPR under legal advice.

Firstly can anyone explain how GDPR trumps the right of a member to inspect the register under s116(1)(a) CA2006?  Secondly can anyone offer a lawful reason why the LTD should collect or hold a Member's DOB?
