Director Emigrated

Can a Director who Emigrated to Canada at Xmas still claim furlough?

Didn't find your answer?

I think I know the answer to this, but just wanted to get a second opinion.

2 director co both working full time in the business. One went on furlough as business locked down. Furloughed director then emigrated to another country at Xmas. He has not got a job there yet, but his active full time role in the company here has ended. They have not tahen him off of the payroll and he is going to stay a director longer term.

Can they claim furlough for him?

Funnily enough this scenario is not included in the help pages on gov.uk.

Thanks for your opinions!

What country has he emigrated to that they allow him to stay without a job?

Genuinely interested.

Furlough - hahahaha. No.

Rhetorical question.

Why do people that say this so rarely say what they think the answer is?

Just like the ones who dont offer an opinion, get an answer then say ' that is as I thought'.

Probably because people want to be right, even when they are wrong. Had a business partner like that. A couple of times I deliberately gave a wrong opinion and guess what, he agreed with my wrong opinion both times.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't state my opinion as I didn't want to influence any of the responses.
I have told them that it is not in keeping with the intention of the scheme, and I'm not willing to make the claim.
I asked on here as I just wanted to make sure others would agree with me and I wasn't being too harsh, as I usually apply everything to the absolute letter of the HMRC rules. And with the last 10 months of working through all of this, with constant pressure and constant rule changes, I am starting to doubt my own judgement.
To be honest I don't think they want to deliberately mislead anyone, I think they were just asking the question. They have accepted my point and they won't claim.
Thank you for everyone's help.
P.S. I am the original poster. I couldn't see how to reply Anon but it doesn't really have to be Anon anyway and with 5 more tax returns to get submitted tonight before I can stop working I don't have time to worry. Thanks again :-)

You will not influence the replies with an opinion.

You only influence the replies with anon posting (or edited out within the 30 minutes and a dot added) as these just wind folk up, apparently.

Keep ploughing on!

'Thanks for the replies. I didn't state my opinion as I didn't want to influence any of the responses.'

That is what my old partner always said

TRUST ME
the usual responders are not copiers
they will tell you if they disagree

More importantly WHY they disagree

Anon with no opinion looks like 'I just cannot be bothered. Let someone else do the work'

Most of the professionals here would be no more influenced by your idea then they would a client putting forward an idea. If it is a crazy scheme or misinterpretation of the rules they will say so. Accountants in practice have to learn to say when something is not right to be successful.

As you say, it didn't really have to be Anon anyway.

But no harm done really. However, it is worth knowing that, due to regular unchecked abuse, posting as Anon has a bad reputation round here. You are much more likely to get friendly, helpful responses if you don't use it unless clearly necessary.
