Can a director be self employed in his own company, especially if this is his only source of income ?

Director was paid monthly sum intended to be payment for minimum salary and dividend. The payment was debited to a directors loan account There was a fall out between the directors and after he had left remaining director regarded payment for self employed consultancy services . Director who left did not have a self employment business established and has asked where it should be shown on his SA tax return
So it was treated wrongly

So the payment was for salary and dividend. Why change?
