Dividends & Bond Interest

Self Assessment Treatment

If both bonds and shares (no foreign) are held in an investment portfolio and a fixed monthly income is received, what is the recommended method of allocating the dividends and bond interest for the purposes of a SAR? In essence the monthly payment is made up of both but there is no realistic way of apportioniong. Can't find any HMRC guidance in this area. Thanks.

Just ask the broker for an income statement. This will break down the portfolio income and also give you the dates so you can work out which return year applies for each item of income. Your broker should provide this automatically at the end of the tax year.
