Do we pay NI on GDC & NMC Income?

Do we pay NI on GDC & NMC Income?

Didn't find your answer?

A quick question. A colleague of mine from the (General Dental Council) GDC & (Nursing & Maternity Centre) NMC also sits for an accountancy regulator. On a recent training day she was told by a fellow panellist, who is an accountant, that pay from any Statutory Body does not attract NI contributions. He told her that he has "saved fellow panellists £1000s of pounds" in reclaimed NI. Obviously both the GDC & NMC would come under this. I would like to check on this platform if anyone has heard of this and comment please.

No actual experience or knowledge (but since when did that stop people answering).

Appointment to professional bodies like those mentioned isn't employment - members gain no employment rights. It seems reasonable, then that any remuneration is paid gross and is not subject to PAYE or Class 1 National Insurance. Whether it's within the scope of Class 4, I'll leave to someone that actually knows what they're talking about.

Appreciate your reply despite having limited knowledge in that. I shall investigate it further perhaps on a different platform.

Might they be office holders though?

Fair point. Again without the benefit of actual knowledge, I could see the chair being an office holder and likewise any other formally constituted roles. Far less convinced about committee members and the like.
