Ebay and VAT registration

Ebay and below VAT threshold

Didn't find your answer?

I have a client that buys and sells lego and other items but mainly lego on ebay. Ebay have told him he needs to prove he is VAT registered and can't sell on there anymore until he proves it. He is below the threshold and I am at a loss to try and fix his situation because even HMRC have said they are aware of Ebay saying customers needs to register when they don't. He does use other platforms but eBay seems to be more successful.

He keeps asking me to provide a certificate to say he is exempt but he is not exempt. He is below the threshold. Even with waiting times to register for VAT, it really is not an option for him to register as all his profit would go on VAT payments. Anyone else had this problem and found a solution?

Is your client based in the UK or are they a non-UK business?

Anything here?

The article is headed

"3 minute article"

It also states, 12 minutes in !?

"Please speak with a tax professional if you have any questions about your tax obligations"

(So much for VAT being a simple tax)

HMRC do not get a look in.!

There is loads about this on the eBay forums. He will need to convince eBay that he doesn’t need to register as a UK seller trading below the threshold. This is a commercial issue and not an accounting issue so not a lot you can do to help.

Yes that is what I thought but just wondered if anyone had managed to sway eBay the other way. Helps that I have tried everything but the random What’s App messages I can’t stop. Thanks for the replies.
