Economia - is there a reader out there?

Economia - is there a reader out there?

Didn't find your answer?

As I bin yet another copy of Economia magazine (sent to me free by the ICAEW) because, quite frankly each time I flip through and find it contains nothing of any interest to me, I was going to cancel my subscription, or at least try and get off the mailing list because I think subscription is automatic and free. I was wondering if there are any ICEAW members who do read it - just in case I have been missing something...

good as a mouse mat

That's what I use mine for - once out of the plastic of-course. I don't read it. Total waste of money by ICAEW

I always read ...

... the disciplinary reports.  There but for the grace of God, etc.!

Apart from that, it is a complete and utter waste of time.  And they send a copy to every single member of ICAEW, so 3 copies arrive at our office every month.

Does the member panel have any influence?

Nichola - I see you are on the member panel of Economia. Is this just for show, or can it influence the content of the magazine?

If it wasn't for the annoying plastic cover

My postman would be able to put it straight in the recycling bin, as he's instructed to do for all my other junk mail.

ICAEW take note:

ICAEW £300ish? - 12 copies of Economia

Tax Faculty £100ish? - 12 copies of TaxLine, various TaxLine Tax Practice reports (as and when) and TaxLine Tax Planning (excellent value - & ICAEW membership not required).

CIOT £300 - Annotated copy of the Finance Act, lots of low cost CPD, ½ price ATT membership and 12 copies of Tax Adviser (well worth it).

ATT £83 - Mouse mat (Rebecca!), Budget Tax Tables, cheap copy of Finance Act Tax Tables, free Tolleys Tax Guide (RRP £120ish?) (amazing value).

@George

You didn't add the superb value that the ACCA offer

£200 (ish) membership plus a further £400 for practising certificate

and we get a lovely magazine once a month too - but ours talks all about Chinese/Malaysian and international issues

bet you are jealous now !!

Only a small one

Like Euan I check the disciplinaries in case I see the name of anyone I have worked with in the past.  (Has happened.)  Also the Letters. The tax bits of the briefing section, although I suspect they are all in TAXLine anyway.  And this time I found the Sleep bit in the health/life section quite interesting.

Otherwise I just have very quick flick through, just in case.

Kind regards

Shirley

Member panel?

Geeps that's incredibly embarassing, so I am. I can't say I have ever been invited to an editorial meeting so clearly it is in name only.

Tell me your secret!  The ATT charge me £165 a year, how do I get the half price subs you speak of?  On top of my ACCA fees (and hopefully, one day, the CTA... oh are you quoting the ATT subs if you are also CIOT?)

Almost instant recycling

I do take the plastic cover off, a quick flick through and bin.  I'd much prefer not to receive it.

Actually, this month's flick through did turn up something that caught my eye - trying to work out what Carbon Accounting had to do with Practice Assurance.  Not that I read the article, but nothing seems to be the answer.  Also a tad optimistic in the use of the word dramatic

Oh well, I'll play the role

of Ugly Duckling

I actually read quite a lot of it and it is infinitely better than Accountancy was. I haven't read the current issue yet and I thought the previous one was a bit weak. But on the whole I enjoy it; as ever, some bits to be skipped over but it goes into areas which either give me a broader knowledge or which I do not normally come across in my working life.

I actually thought it was one of the more worthwhile ICAEW offerings - clearly I'm in a minority. So no change there then. :-)

I read it all too.

I must do - because it goes on my CPD record as unstructured time. Takes me at least two hours a month.

Just to reduce the reader numbers. The disciplinary hearings on are on line

Enjoy them sadists all

I think the adverts inside are worth quickly looking at

Its always good to keep an eye on what suppliers are offering.

I remember Scottish widows  a few years back offering 110% mortgages in Accountancy. I see in this month's edition of Economia, we only get a 90% offer from them!

Economia = eco damage

I would have thought that an online .pdf would have been the modern eco-friendly solution, ie. by default all those entitled to receive Economia would be given access to an online .pdf, with those wanting to damage the environment being entitled on request a paper copy (perhaps at extra cost) [or subscription price reduction if opting out of paper and choosing online version instead].

It's both eco friendly and useful

I use it to line my cat litter trays thus saving the environmental impact of buying litter tray liners. The fact that the magazine is delivered to my house means I don't have to get the car out to go and buy the liners either.

can you beat that?

This thread prompted me to count the number of unopened Economia's I've got stacked up ready to read sometime = 9! Time for a de-clutter methinks.

Not fit even for cat litter

Why do you line your cat litter trays?  Just wash out the tray when you bin the litter.

Better still - train the cat to go outdoors.  Probably even more eco friendly.

If you do ...

... make sure you train it to go in your own garden, my raised beds are for vegetables, they are not outdoor communal litter trays!

I've never figured out ...

... why our cats go out for a few minutes and then come back in to use the trays.

I thought they were maybe a little shy  :)

My cats don't go out

Our cats are house cats. The only people that need to deal with their poo is me and my wife.

@Euan Washing the litter tray is much easier with a few layers of Economia in the bottom - uses less hot water = more eco-friendly, less cost.

.

With my business hat on, if they make more money out of the advertising than it costs them to send out, then keep on.

On the other hand, if it costs them money I'd rather have my discount on my subs than have to rip the cover off and stuff it into the recycling.

Still to look on the bright side, if you do read it, it doesn't go on about world domination fantasies as per the ACCA.

Why rip the cover off? My council includes that in the recycling.
