Finding out how many properties someone owns?

Finance matters in divorce proceedings

Didn't find your answer?

Hi,

I am supporting a client who cannot afford legal help as his business has suffered in the last couple of years. To make matters worse, he is going through a divorce. He is of the view that his partner is concealing some properties that she bought without his knowledge. Is there a way of finding out how many properties she owns and where they are located in the UK?

Thank you for your help in advance.

My understanding based on previous client enquiries and/or rants is that she (or rather both of them) will have to submit a statement of assets as part of the process. This should, of course, include any such rental properties.

If you (or your client) think she is lying on these documents, then i assume this would be something to bring to the attention of the court. I'm not aware of any property register that is searchable by name.

I appreciate you want to help the guy out, but be careful about providing (particularly legal) services that are outside of your own knowledge or experience. The guy may suddenly find enough cash for a lawyer if he thinks he's got a claim against YOU for advice you probably shouldn't have given.

Or advice you should have given but did not.

I agree with my learned friends. You'd need to be divorced from reality to advise on this.

Agree all to date
If he is low income and she high income then the solicitor that should be dealing with this should be someone who deals with this on a daily basis
Your client will have no idea what is a reasonable settlement

Second all the above comments.

My own divorce process started back in the 2020 and I will admit that my biggest mistakes were oversimplification of the process and underestimating the value of family lawyer (especially when the 2nd party is looking to bleed you dry). Loads of things could have gone wrong (and a fair few did) until I realised the value of divorce lawyer. They do charge c. £300 ph, but are often well worth it when there are assets to be split.

I would recommend directing your client to a family lawyer. Quite a few of them are happy to be paid from the settlement funds at a later date or offer low cost finance to fund their services.
