First Time Trust tax return

Procedure to get software to work

Didn't find your answer?

We have a life interest trust (arising from my father's will from 2012)

In previous years the solicitors lodged the return by paper. I have this year been asked if I can lodge using TaxCalc software we have at work, I will lodge as a trustee not an agent . (I am no longer an agent)

I registered the trust  a while back underthe  trust registration scheme, as was required, I have that gateway and password that I set up back then, but this does not want to work using TaxCalc. Is there some button to press within the Trust Registration platform to activate SA submission by trustees?

I do not really want to try calling HMRC so any guidance re how to get an activated Gateway ID/Password appreciated. In effect is the Trust registration one useable for SA or is something else needed?

Thanks

Assuming your software has the relevant licence (its an extra on many packages) I don't think you can submit from agent software using a personal authority?

I would speak to tax calc they do at least answer the phones.

On the File Return by Internet page couldn't you change the radio button to "Use User gateway credentials" & enter them in the relevant boxes?

I have bought the licences for my trusts, and do two others as trustee with no issues, using Gateway ID and password for each (Taxcalc lets you choose firm agent ID or individual ID, since Sept 2019 I do all our using their individual Gateway ID and passwords). What I am wondering is do I need to activate online submission in some way, this trust is registered with the Trust Service but either that Gateway is not the one to use for SA or within there is a box to tick to activate.

Doubt it. Fairly sure Trust returns are filed using the standard SA platform & not anything to do with the TRS.

Do you have Firm / Office credentials in there then? If so couldn't you seek permission to use these?

No- we do each of our returns using individual Gateways, so each business/individual has their own (I have a book where there is near a page of them). When in practice I used my practice credentials to lodge but since then, 2019/2020,2020/2021, 2021/2022 and2022/2023 I have lodge each one distinctly on its own password and ID, I do this as an employee/Comp Sec/Director/Trustee of each etc.

So suspect will need to get HMRC to give me an online Gateway for same, at least late filing fine is not very much nor is the tax bill, and we know what that is so can still pay it. The bit I am not looking forward to doing is calling HMRC!!!!

Update- managed to get onto our Trust Gateway and request it sets us up for Self Assessment online, whilst activation code will take up to seven days once received and activated ought to be able to lodge the IT return from Taxcalc.
