Build it in Excel?

I have a spreadsheet with the following columns

A Asset No.

B Description

C Date Purchased

D Depreciation Rate

E Cost

F Accumulated Depreciation

G Disposal date

H Disposal Sale Value

I to AB Depreciation for year

The formulas in Depreciation for year columns automatically calculate in year of addition, not in year of disposal.

Works for me.

Cheers

Welcome to use my fixed assets workbook

One of my all-time favourite workbooks is my fixed assets register. It's fully automatic, macro-free, maintenance-light and perfectly reliable.

I should also mention its drawbacks. It's not flexible (i.e. it only works in one way), the calculations are quite hard to follow and it doesn't handle tax written down values at all.

I've published it for free use by anyone who's interested. Download my fixed assets workbook and give it a whirl.

Is this available? I would be interested in seeing it and maybe using it!

Hi,

I know this is a while since the last post.

First off: great register! Really slick.

2 things: I had to work out how to add more asset fields (my company has 8 categories), but that is easy enough to do

Second: is there any way to change it from a daily calculation to monthly? I have tried everything and am just not getting it. Ideal would be to have an "if" formula to say "if bought before 15th of month, count month, if after start next month" but that can be worked around. Most important would be to calculate monthly (i.e. month = 1 irrespective of amount of days).

Please help if possible.

Thanks

Hi Justin,

did you get an answer regarding Depreciation straight line full month instead of Daily? or have you found another template that does it?

Hello Justin,
There isn't any way to swap the depreciation calculation method within the workbook as it stands. The design technique I used for this workbook has strengths and weaknesses, one of which is that it's fairly inflexible and opaque in how the results are calculated. If you need a different depreciation method then all of the formulae used need to be reconstructed and not all methods would be easy, or even possible, to create without changing the design substantially.

It would be an interesting challenge to create an alternative version but I'm afraid I don't have time at present to give that a go. I'm sorry if that means you need to find an alternative.

Regards,
James
