You can claim absolutely anything you like as an expense on a tax return, the question being if HMRC agree with you.

The sub-clause following your comma obscured the hilarity of your joke, for me.

I upload all my Tesco receipts to Sage and the claim is made automatically. I hardly pay any tax at all. It's great.

I detect hints of sarcasm.

See, I recognise it when it's done right. (It helps that I know AA shops at Waitrose.)

Yes- buy a restaurant and it gets promoted from expenses to purchases; context helps.

Grocers do it all the time.

Very common.

Certainly some of the corner shops- buying their milk etc from the supermarkets who are really cheap re some items. (Years ago I had a dairy farm client with their own bottling/distribution who , once a supermarket opened locally, could just not compete on price)

Suzi23, get an accountant and pay for the right advice specific to your circumstances. What dodgy dealing are you not up to this time?

Sure - no-one takes this querist seriously, with her one line questions.

Not to mention - a serial deleter.

Why do you ask, when you have previously stated:-

So the op earned $140k in royalties from book sales and she's asking if food is an allowance expense.

So in what world is your food wholey and exclusively related to your business?

Writer creating new recipes for a hoped for bestselling recipe book?

Food demonstrators ;we used to do internal audit for a body involved with the fishing industry and one of its roles was encouraging the cooking and eating of fish (pre sushi in the uk)) , I would presume the hired in self employed food demonstrators got a tax deduction for the ingredients they bought- one of the better jobs as the creations were available afterwards to be sampled, even by internal audit!!
