For those registered for ML with HMRC

Late renewal is not advisable-do not fall out of HMRC it appears a hard climb back

Didn't find your answer?

My MLR with HMRC expired on 30th September.

On 29th September I logged into HMRC account using my company details, completed an endless online form, got to the end of it and got told my MLR was not associated with that HMRC account. Okay, I  then tried with my company login as an agent, no use, no MLR bits on that one .Then I tried my personal tax account, no joy, not a business account. no MLR bits. Scratched head and thought, better call HMRC Monday; big mistake.

This morning  before calling HMRC managed to track down, via reviewing a lot of e mails,  that last year (I do not remember this)  I needed to  and did set up yet another HMRC account,  just for MLR; no wonder I did not remember, I last used it October 2017.

However upon finally getting on to this other account I then discover that as I had not renewed by 30th September my registration was now cancelled, (message on the account dated today) and I needed to do a full new application, renewal , like failure, was no longer an option.

I tried to call HMRC to see if  there was some means of them reinstating  my set up details so that I could just renew MLR,  on third attempt and  after a long wait, in total forty minutes of my life, obliging chap at HMRC answered. He was sympathetic but could not connect me with their ML team (they do not  appear to have a  telephone number, they are still on carrier pigeon system) ,email was only way to contact them;  given projected delays  re their responding  it was suggested to me that maybe just doing the whole registration process was simpler.

So,  much later, my morning now gone ,my application is made,  fee is paid. No idea if I will get my old ML number,  I am advised they may take 45 days to confirm a registration, I am also advised by the friendly chap at HMRC to contine trading (Phil needs the tax I pay him) despite  my reservatiions that technically I do not currently have a MLR in place until they confirm I have (If he is wrong I will likely be posing on A Web from Saughton  prison soon)

The moral, do not let 58 years olds have four different Gov log ins, they get very confused, and do your HMRC ML renewal early.

God, I am getting old.

I shouldn't expect an early reply. I did my renewal on 3 January 2018 (for renewal on 1 February 2018) and despite various emails with various HMRC staff I am still waiting for them to complete the work. They have confirmed that my renewal has been received (and paid for) but "they are very busy at present"

I am glad I am a "customer" of such an efficient organisation!

I was a little worried by this but as I appear to have done everything I should I have decided not to worry about it.

I am looking forward to when renewal comes around again in February 2019. I don't think I can do anything until they renew the previous year's application.

P**s-ups and breweries spring to mind!

Glad to hear that David

My renewal is 1 July and I've been waiting since 3 June so on your experience I've got at least another 5 months yet. I will be interested to hear what happens when you try to renew in Jaunary next year. Please let Aweb members know.
