Foreign tax credit tax relief, gross or net?

Foreign tax credit tax relief, gross or net?

Didn't find your answer?

I had work in norway got paid the net amount in to UK bank account the company i worked for paid all the taxes associated with it, how does hmrc work out the foreign tax credit amount?  Will the gross amount (net and tax paid in norway) be converted to uk gross salary and the tax that wouldve been paid in uk be all the tax i will get relief on ?  Or is the net amount paid into my bank account taken as the gross amount in uk so ill only get foreign tax credit on the tax i wouldve paid on receiving the net amount in the uk?  So basically will the foreign tax credit be worked out on the money into my bank account or the whole amount paid on my behalf in norway (net plus taxes) very confused

Are you intending to do your own tax return?

No not intending on doing own TR just trying to understand, took the work thinking all tax in norway would be deducted from tax due in uk but looking like only tax on the amount paid into my uk bank account will be used as tax relief so the net amount paid into the bank will be converted to a gross uk salary and whatever tax shoulve been paid in uk is all i can claim?

No not the way it usually works
There will be a treaty that avoids double taxation
Most operate on gross
Most not all
Your accountant will need to look it up and get it right
Usually
working on gross
Work out UK tax
deduct from UK tax the tax ( but only tax) deducted by other country
do not deduct more than the UK tax would be
pay the difference

disclaimer did not look up Norway
other rules can be applied

Talk to the accountant. LOTS of other disclaimers on residence etc

As you say, way too little info, but I doubt that there will be much of a net UK liability to worry about.

Useful to look at other Anon threads.
Anon is for sensitive stuff.
Just look at the ten most recent and you will get the drift

Can it not wait until your accountant is at work in the morning?
