furlough factory staff

Didn't find your answer?

Hiya

We have a factory where they have given the staff the choice to work rather than force close!  4 members have choosen not to, 2 are home for their children and 5 have continued to work.  The create decking for boats.  My opinion is this is non essential work and therefore they could close the doors and furlough the staff but they are talking about redundancies and putting the staff who have choosen not to work just on SSP.  They seem to think that factory staff can't be furloughed but I can't seem to see anything to back this up as I thought factories could furlough at any time like when they have not enough stock etc.  What are your thoughts?

Thank you all

Clara

So when you said "we have a factory", you meant "we have a client who has a factory".

OK - well, as I understand it, you can furlough part of your staff. Even if you're in an essential trade.

What trade is your client in ? Why is he not closing the place down for three weeks ?

Have you thought of waiting until the actual rules of the scheme are published?

At the moment, we can only guess and express opinions that are untroubled by actual facts.

Without a doubt but the client is acting quickly and not waiting so I'm just seeing if anyone knew about anything whether anyone knew if factories could put their staff on furlough or not? If no one knows that's absolutely fine. Just reaching out really.

We are furloughing some factory and other staff.

Some of our customers are in nuclear and medical supply chains so we are staying open, but with reduced demand

Yes of course a factory CAN Furlough staff if it is an alternative to dismissing them. The provisions were not trade specific in any way.

These new guidelines under the ICAEW are a hot mess. I suggest you take everything under an empathetic view. Things are very bad out there. Avail any possible relief possible. Keep your calm until the govt offers some clarity on the situation at hand.
