I was happily using Google Chrome this morning and then I searched for the new NMR rates and this popped on screen.
"Your connection is not fully secure

NET::ERR_SSL_OBSOLETE_VERSION"
Since then, I've not been able to search for anything on Google Chrome. I've had to switch to Microsoft.
Is it me - or them ?

I'm using Chrome and have been all day with no issues.
I would suggest restarting the computer, reinstalling Chrome and checking the computer date & time is correct, if none of that helps then I'm afraid I don't know!
Not very helpful I'm afraid, but I've been using the Chrome browser all day without any problems (let alone your specific one).
The only (possibly coincidental) fact is that my PC updated Windows 10 overnight ... which might have included a fix for whatever is causing your problem?
Are you using Google's own Chrome, or the open source version (Chromium) or a derivative (Brave)?
Google have now restricted their API's such that 3rd party derivatives no longer have access to them, and this could be a symptom of that.

GMAIL, CHROME, AND AMAZON ARE CRASHING ON ANDROID PHONES AMID STRANGE BUG
That was fixed yesterday and Lion isn't using an Android device, or at least I presume he isn't if browser option 2 is Microsoft.
It sounds like a software patching issue. You can turn on verbose logging or as you did switch to Edge which in my opinion is now more feature rich and pending updates are more visible.
The message should be the version of SSL being outdated, but it sounds like something else.
