Grants for newly acquired restaurant

Can the new lessee of an existing restaurant make claims for grants?

Didn't find your answer?

Hello all,

Does anyone have any experience of claiming grants for a company that has just taken over a lease on an existing restaurant?

The restaurant is of course closed but the client has just acquired the lease by means of an assignment.  The staff have been trrnasfrerred by TUPE to the new PAYE registration and CJRS claims can continue.  The old company had grants from the local council but the new grants I think only start from 1 April. Does anyone know if new assigneees can claim these re-opening grants?

Thanks.

Try looking at the application process and guidance from the relevant local authority. If grants are administered by local authorities, my guess (and it's only a guess) that approach to change of ownership will vary.

LA's usually pay the grants in to the bank account nominated on the first claim - back in 2020. Assuming that has closed, you may need to contact the LA to advise them of the situation. I don't think they're bothered who is the lessee, they only distribute the money. They give Scout Groups the same grants as businesses get and none of them trade (not mine anyway)

I do not think the guidance is out for the April grants yet, but past grants are based on who was registered for business rates for the premises. So make sure you have updated the council for the change in ownership, otherwise the grant will probably be paid automatically to the previous owner.
