Great fake HMRC call from 03002003639

A warrant has been issued; arrest imminent

Great call this morning to brighten my day. Call from above number with recorded message stating HMRC tax fraud/evasion/criminal conviction etc. and an arrest warrant issued. Press option 1 and all your problems will be solved. So I do and get through to a man with an accent and he tells me it is £1,700 and repeats the content of the recorded message. I tell him that I'd better pay and should I call 'the' HMRC and he tells me yes I should do that and disconnects.

Honestly! I used to get great mileage out of these people on these calls but they are no fun anymore.

The problem is that because HMRC operate so nastily and unprofessionally these days most people would believe it I expect.

I like the "we understand that you've had an accident" ones.
I usually begin with "you cannot believe how awful and frightening it was". "I have good days and bad days" etc
Once they've worked out that I'm taking the - proverbial
they usually mention that I could've told them that I hadn't had an accident, when they first called? Really? Must be me!

I tell them that I got pregnant by accident but I don't know how it happened.

I heard a good one regarding this, when they mention accident:

"Yes, please! Thank goodness some one believes me! You see I didn't mean to be holding the knife when they fell against me!"

I think it's a pretty quick hangup after that.

"Apparently, if I had pressed one it would've taken me through to a premium line number charging £35 per minute."

Given I had received the call, I am intrigued to know how that works.
