Has the old VAT account finally closed?

Has it?

Didn't find your answer?

I have just tried to submit a VAT return for a client using old agent login details and I end up in a loop when I click on "submit a return" as it then says that I have signed out and I end up back at the original login screen.

I thought that you could still submit returns the "old" way until the end of June?

We submitted one successfully the old way last week, for a client who is not yet in MTD. I am now waiting to see if the direct debit is actually taken on 10th June, as the acknowledgement said it would be.

HMRC's Agent Update 82 said that the process of moving 'customers' to the new platform, would take place over the course of the period from April to September 2021.

Perhaps you have been unlucky and your client has been moved already, and I've been more fortunate - for now.

Upon re-reading Agent Update 82, it says that if the obligation to file a VAT return is showing on the old portal, it will be possible to submit it. If the obligation is not showing, then your client has been migrated and you will need to use the non-MTD filing service, that it says is available from within your agent services account.

It sounds as if this may not actually be the cause of your problem.

It isn't not showing, it's just when you click on file a VAT return it says "You have signed out" and promptly kicks you out. No mention of MTD.

I finally got through to the VAT office, and it doesnt mean you have to use MTD, its just yet another HMRC balls up.

The only way to file the return is to after you get the "You have signed out" you click on the link to go back to HMRC services. Then sign in using the MTD ASA account instead and it takes you into a new version of the return that you can file (but not MTD)

I was told by HMRC that ALL affected customers would be written to . I contacted the MTD department at HMRC who have ignored my Email. I don't think that is very helpful when HMRC stated that they would help any Agent that needed help. Strange that HMRC seem to be chancing VAT not being paid in this way. To protect the Public Purse you would think they would be more proactive with such a major change. Might be doing some DIY at home.

UPDATE: I logged in with my ASA account and went as if to migrate the client across. I then got the option to submit a VAT return the old fashioned way, so I did so....... new sharper layout that looks nothing like the old paper VAT returns, but I was still able to file the return manually.

Thanks for confirming that claudialowe - i was somewhat dubious that it would be as easy as navigating to appropriate place and submitting - nice to hear that its not an empty promise on hmrc's part.

I wish you could tell me how to do this . On my portal not one client shows up and nothing about migration. I have an ASA and all clients where migrated - all are exempt and all show under my old gateway ID. I can't understand why something so simple is made such a chore.

It took a few random clicks to get to the correct bit, which is where you enter the VAT number. It wanted me to migrate across all of my VAT and SA clients. Once I had found the correct link, entered the VAT number, it took me to a similar screen as on the old VAT agents account. Sorry, I can't remember which magic combination I clicked on!

Old portal hasn't closed yet , but there has been a systems Snafu:

I logged in to file one the old way and was redirected to my ASA where, after logging in again, I was able to file the VAT return manually.

I spoke with a VAT techie - an IT guy - earlier this month, who confirmed that if you don't migrate your client across (or, I suppose, if the client doesn't somehow migrate hisself) to your "new" MTD for VAT agent login then you'll be able to file via your "old" login until circa April 2022 (indeed, that will be the only way you will be able to file if you haven't elected to migrate your client to your new agent login).

You can run both your old and new agent logins in tandem (although a client can only be attached to one or the other).

Apparently Covid has slowed down HMRC's original plans. Here's my post on the matter, from another thread, made 11th May. Straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak:

Just to flag for anyone placing future reliance upon this thread that HMRC's 70022 MTD guidance doesn't exactly shout out the obvious that anyone with a sub £85k annual t/o (in accordance with VAT registration threshold rules) doesn't have to switch to or comply with MTD for VAT until April 2022 (*at the earliest). It's there, at the bottom bullet point of s3.1 (of 70022). Exemption from MTD is the default position for any sub £85k t/o business; it's automatic.

*at the earliest because apparently it's yet to be confirmed and announced in any VAT publications. I've just had that from the horse's mouth.

From the same HMRC techie, the "old" agent's logins (and, for that matter, clients' own "old" logins) to VAT 100 forms will continue to work for the foreseeable future. I know J.S. had written an article last October about HMRC's plans to retire the old form in April 2021. That's evidently been postponed. Indeed, it seems the old form will be the only way to file non-MTD clients' VAT returns for the forthcoming 11 months or so. You can run your "old" non-MTD for VAT agent login in tandem with your "new" MTD for VAT agent login.

I had the same issue, then clicking around finally found the right place.

If you login to the Agent Service Account.

Under Tax Services you can manage in this account - you should see 'Making Tax Digital for VAT' - click the drop down at the bottom you will 'Manage your client's VAT details'

Just below 'Manage your client's VAT details' you should see 'Use this service for clients who have signed up for or opted out of Making Tax Digital (opens in a new tab)' - select this and you just have to enter the client's VAT number and then it will show the VAT form to complete in a clean/modern layout.

And in this fabulous new system they are only showing the VAT numbers - not the business name! I've just had to go through my whole client list and name every single client against the VAT number - including some who ceased trading 18 months ago and are no longer clients.

There is also no facility to remove a client from your list!
