Have you received a CJRS compliance letter?

HMRC is writing to some employers about CJRS claims, but the agents should receive a copy

Didn't find your answer?

HMRC have said that it will be concentrating their CJRS compliance activity on those who have been abusing the system. It will focus on fraudulent claims and not on cases where the employer has made an innocent error. The first compliance letters began to arrive on 18 August. Have your cleints received such a letter?

I would be interested to see a copy of the letter, if you can provide a redacted copy, as HMRC has not shared the text with the professional bodies.

None of mine have said they've received anything.

Mind you, if these letters are dated 18th August, they probably haven't made the post box yet.

Not had a letter but a message from HMRC on my answering machine this morning asking for one of my clients by name and wanting to discuss the impact that Covid has had on their business.
They said there was no obligation to return the call and they would try again in a few days. If they still can't speak to someone they will then write. All very friendly!

Checked the tel number and it's the VAT office.

So, we had one of these letters. Very generic but 2 key points.

1) "our records show that you have received a CJRS grant payment and may need to repay some or all of the grant you have received. This is becuase you may have:
- claimed for a CJRS grant which is more than you are entitled to based on the information we hold about your employees
- not met the conditions to receive a CJRS grant - for example by including employees in the your CJRS claim who are not eligible
2) if you do not contact them by phone by 22nd September then you will have a compliance check opened on you.

We were contacting to state that we couldn't identify an issue from our internal review and could they provide details of the discrepancy.

Phone number is very difficult to get through to - I waited almost an hour to connect having had to give up on several previous occasions. Chap on the phone said that the unit was struggling with the volume of calls.

Once you do get through, they verify your identity and then go through a series of generic questions about the claim process and eligibility criteria.

Then you are told that a contact will be assigned to your case. However, the relevant systems are *not* available as they are still being built, and most likely will not be available for a number of weeks...which is confusing as they claim to have already identified data discrepancies!

All in all, a bit of a shambles. I think they have shot out a load of letters in a state of limited readiness.

Much appreciated
As much for the expected HMRC inability to cope as letter contents.

Except that there aren't enough bears to catch the salmon, and even those that have made it to the river are just cubs.

True. Which is why they're inviting folk to say "Oh aye, I think we have claimed too much after all."

Are you the employer, and did you submit yourself.
All my submissions for clients gave me and my email as person to contact. Reason I ask is that would be interested to know if agent received a copy.

I am the employer and we submitted ourselves. I am not sure if that was why we were sent the letter (deemed higher risk than those using an agent)

My guess is your claims are much bigger than my clients.
