HMRC Agent Authorisation

Can more than one agent hold agent authorisation

Didn't find your answer?

We recently took on a new client who uses a book-keeping company to prepare the VAT & Payroll. Our brief is purely the year-end accounts / corp tax / directors personal tax

As part of the year end accounts process we reconcile the VAT and PAYE to the submitted figures to HMRC.

The book-keeping company already holds agent authorisation, and are concerned if we request agent authorisation HMRC will remove their authorisation. Has anyone any experience of similar situations, and if both the book-keepers and ourselves can hold seperate agent authorisations?

yes i dont see any way of not booting them out if you go in and vice versa (doe anyone else?) - only botch it way is to be added as a separate user in their gateway (that would be new gateway setup) if one exists - then at least you could view info - thats probably on hmrc's list of dont do though so thats not a recommedation from me.

Note i dont see why a separate read only user access via different gateway should pose any particualr security risk whatsoever anyway - but thats hmrc for you.

You might be able to with VAT as it's the new ASA but I'm almost certain this would be a pain to organise for PAYE as it'd have to be a paper 64-8 with a note on to request not removing the other agent and hope HMRC can read.

It begs the question, why is authority necessary if you won't be carrying out these services? I'm sure you'll have access to their books that will be used to submit the VAT returns via MTD. Could you not ask the bookkeepers for their reconciliations when you prepare the accounts.

Surely you can get authorised for just CT & SA & leave the VAT & PAYE authorisation with the book-keeping company?

Yes exactly. Don't request PAYE or VAT access, as this will definitely remove it from the bookkeepers.

I guess you could always write a letter, with paper authorisations. Or, is that a frivolous expectation, these days?
You could always speak to HMRC. Again, I know I’m setting the bar, quite high!
