HMRC Amending tax return and doubling SEISS

Taxfiler.co.uk - HMRC Amending tax return and doubling SEISS

Didn't find your answer?

Hi all

I can see a few questions about an SEISS issue with HMRC but can't quite seem to find a solution.

I used taxfiler to file quite a few self-assessments where a SEISS amount entered into 'Any other business income (including Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme payments)'. HMRC then send a revised calculation adding the SEISS to the total figure which already includes SEISS and hence doubling-up!

The box has been ticked where we declare that all covid income is included in taxable profits.

Is this something HMRC will fix themselves or is there something I can do with the way I amend and resubmit the return?

Any help would be much appreciated!

I think you put the SEISS grants in the wrong box. They go into box 27.1 of the short self-employment section, and box 70.1 of the full version.

Not Taxfiler’s issue, yours for entering into the wrong box. The one marked as for SEISS income would better ;-)

I wouldn't have done this.

With all due respect, this forum has been a mine of information on the subject.

You need to work your way through all the boxes and sections required to report SEISS on Taxfiler.

You will need to refile all the incorrect returns submitted if necessary.

I find this forum good for putting you in the right direction for things like this. I then spend time working it all out.

I find that working the tax out myself before I enter the numbers on to the software is a good way to ensure that errors don't occur.

If I know the answer, I can easily tell if the software is working as I expected it to work.

In this case the software would give the correct tax. But after submission, HMRC amend the Return adding in SEISS income because the op didn’t enter it in the correct box, which looks like an omission in their eyes

Ah yes - gotcha.

Now I'm wondering what the OP thought the new box was for.

Just to add some further info here - cant see that it has been pointed out as of yet.

The following is not actually the SA box description !

'Any other business income (including Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme payments)'.

The SA box description is as follows

Any other business income (include coronavirus support payments such as CJRS, but not SEISS)

- so there really shouldnt be any confusion over boxes 10/16 on the sole trader as the guidance clearly say do not use !!- its either user error or the tax package may perhaps be unhelpfully using a shortened description perhaps that misses the important text of the end ? - I do know BTC have the full text on display so where we have used the wrong box internally it has been our own user error - names of the guilty witheld to protect the guilty in that regard.

Logged in taxfiler to check, you complete a data entry page with this package and you’re right they have missed out the BUT NOT SEISS part on that page. There is the usual SEISS data entry box further down though . If you click to view the return, the wording is correct

Strewth thats pretty poor - you would think they were owned by IRIS or something.
I did think there seemed to be alot of bods making this error - doesnt help when the software suppliers miss the important part of a box description and lead us up the wrong garden path!! - long live BTC.

Yes in fairness to the op he/she was going by what they read. I only knew it shouldn’t go there through seeing many posts before getting to complete my first tax return

This has happened to everyone of my clients, when I called it was an error internally. I managed to speak to someone who amended even though the gateway showed the amended figures internally it was their error

You entered SEISS in the wrong box and that was an error internally ?
