HMRC check when you can expect to receive a reply

Is anyone getting an accurate date when they use this?

Didn't find your answer?

Following a previous helpful thread about unsolicited tax returns and delays in issuing repayments, I phoned HMRC and advised that my client (already with a UTR) would need to file a tax return for 2021/22.

The HMRC adviser I spoke to said that the online record would be updated in 72 hours. The check when you can expect to receive a reply gave the same date. I phoned today and was told that a notice issue was still 3 weeks away.

Interested to see whether the online check is working for other AWebbers?

Seem to be differing views but I personally haven't been issued with a tax return for the past 5 years. I don't bother getting one issued, just file as normal.

The check when you can expect a reply tool is just a fantasy and doesn't reflect what happens in practice.

HMRC can't distinguish a planned outcome (a 'target' if you will) from a result in the real world ... which probably explains a lot of the confusion about (and missing detail from) their MTD plans.

The online record is usually updated with the notice within 1 working day though it can take a few weeks for the paper notice to be issued to the taxpayer. Regarding the https://www.tax.service.gov.uk/guidance/HMRC-service-dashboard/HMRC-serv... has got a lot of problems. There are many reports on HMRC's Agent Forum of the dashboard saying normal service yet there's a delay of many months. HMRC have been supplied with evidence by Forum members and they are investigating.
