HMRC & "in year adjustments"

More of a moan than a question

Didn't find your answer?

Just checked two clients online tax liabilities and found one was £110 more and the other £330 than our filed figures.

Rang HMRC and was told they were "in year adjustments", he could not explain why/what they were and just manually altered them back to our original filed figures.

Now checking another coding notice and Note 7 is an in year adjustment, yet another call to be made.

Is this a common thing I need to look for.

Yes, it is.

If HMRC were; properly funded and, engaged a capable management structure, who weren't looking for national recognition at the time of their leaving, then HMRC would be downright dangerous and, a force to be reckoned with.

As it is, we on this side, fund their errors, as if by magic.
In my mind, I mouth the acronym "SOS". I'll give you a head-start; "shower of ****"!

I like Bunch of Clowns better.... the white faced ones that will typically be the ringleaders, who will order around the other clowns, and who have their “clownishness” revealed either by their own ineptness or by that of their underlings.

I check before the Return is sent for approval, and where there's an in year adjustment in the code, I've taken to warning clients in advance that HMRC will probably make an incorrect adjustment to their Return, that they can safely ignore.

That's how common it is.

Great, but presumably you then have to contact HMRC for every client it happens to, to have it corrected ! .

Of course. That's where the costs, on "this side" come from.

Been happening on and off for some years. It is now almost a daily event though.

In the past it was quite hard to sort out as HMRC had the "computer says" mentality, yet had no idea where these 'underpayments' came from. At least now HMRC (agent's line anyway) recognise the problem and amend it straightaway.

One HMRC person did ask why someone hadn't pointed out during the year that the PAYE code was wrong, which is a fair question!

Possibly it will have got worse from last year when dynamic coding started and they began making adjustments to collect estimated underpayments of the year following a change of coding downwards.

All to help the 'customer' pay 'the right tax in the year not a later one' - **cough b******t cough**

Had 4 this year for this very reason.

It's not working. They need to stop it.
