HMRC Online Accounts

Deletion of Online Business Tax Accounts, Blocking New Agents Access

Didn't find your answer?

A client has moved accountants.  The new agents are attempting to access VAT online MTD.  We always accessed it via an agent portal as authorised agents.  One of the old directors did have a HMRC business tax account but did not have ANY services alloted on there - I think it was set up just to authorise us at one point.  It has never been used to submit anything and nothing is viewable on there as a service.  That director has since left the company and the new agent/accountant is saying they cannot gain access to file a VAT return because of that directors old business account.  I cant see how to advise that director to delete the business tax account, but also - I dont see how this would block a new agent getting authourised unless they were trying to get an account as the business and not through an agent account.

Any thoughts?

My thoughts are that it's not your problem, it's for the new advisers to sort out. I'd just bat it back to them and say we submitted via an agent account & can't help further.

Agree
Not your problem
BUT chances are new 'accountant' trying to use client tax account

On handover we regularly get requested for client logs in

Agree.
And we occasionally get asked to give OUR log in details! Like that's going to happen!
Normally these requests come when client's motivation to leave is fee based and they've gone to some bargain basement outfit.

Thank you all, I always try to be helpful on handovers. But I have never had this issue - I never feel the need to ask prior agents to delete their authorisations - we just issue authorisation requests via HMRC and take over. I do get requests for log ins occasionally but we dont access individual accounts, only the agent portal. I can't see how you can't get a fresh log in even if one of the prior directors had an account. It has baffled me why it is this difficult, because surely, even if all directors had a gateway log in, this would not block access to a new agent in any way....

Just had something very similar happen when trying to use MTD Agent authorisation process to onboard a new client.
Have ended up having to use original old Vat agent authorisation process. This only works if you put in the March 2019 Box 5 figure (or last box 5 figure before client signed up for MTD).
