HMRC online agent authorisation

Any problems?

Didn't find your answer?

Is anyone experiencing problems with agent authorisation? In the past few weeks, I have had a number of codes expire because they haven't been received by the client.  Is it just me or anyone else finding the same?

Yep, the codes are turning up later and later, much closer to the expiration date. And on some occasions, afterwards.

Oh that's the ones that do turn up. My office is the RO for many clients and only 25% of codes turn up at all.

We experience this issue on an all to regular basis. With some clients we have given up as we have requested codes 5 times and they don't show. Addresses are correct.

With the new MTDfV agent services account you can get registered as the agent by sending the client a link to click on. It is much quicker and easier. Hopefully this will be rolled out across all services.

In general we find that all HMRC post arrives weeks after the date on the letter. It makes us look bad when we forward it to a client as they think we have been sat on it for days.

If you have software using the API the client can request your software to give them a link to authorise you and it can be part of client onboarding.

I don't suppose you have an idiots guide to finding the ASA MTD auth link? I have tried and only found the 'normal' way of authorising via online (and surprise, surprise, still waiting on the code to come through). Maybe I am looking at the wrong thing?

They do need to have enrolled for MTD for you to be able to do this.

I also assumed you need to do this in addition to the "regular" VAT authorisation.

It does seem hit and miss.

Gearing up for MTD I did a bit of an exercise to make we were authorised for all taxes we act for and requested a load.

Some came after the 28 days expired, some didnt come at all.

whilst I accept some will be down to client error there was a lot we will still have to pick up with a second sweep

yes, at first I thought it was my client losing the letter, but now after reading your post it appears I suffered the same fate.

Thank you for posting about this. I have a client with a really awful post-room. He's been blaming them for losing his authorisation letter.
I now think the letter wasn't sent. I had another client who also didn't get a similar letter last year.

Not good is it...at first I thought it was a one-off but in the past couple of weeks I have been waiting on 5 to come through, 2 of which are second attempts. Does HMRC read this page??

I'm finding them turning up later and later, 2 to 3 weeks if you are lucky.

Not sure there is a paper authorisation for VAT?

:(
