HMRC VAT address insansity

HMRC VAT address insansity

Didn't find your answer?

Are non-vat registered practitioners aware of a piece of monumental imbecilism in the agent address registration process for VAT? I moved house about six months ago. It has been a long saga of endless phone calls, emails, letters and complaints to get my new agent's address listed correctly across all taxes. I have now achieved this, except in one aspect. If you are a non-vat registered agent, HMRC's systems have no way of changing your VAT online services address! It is set in stone and linked to your agent code! This means that if you phone them, you have to remember to give your old address. I asked the online services helpdesk several things about this matter, including how is it possible to design something so stupid, and what do they use the address for. It turns out they only use it as a security question, and nothing is ever sent there.

Yup!
Same happened to me, it took ages to change the address and even now it's not updated on VAT.

Last time I called I gave my new address and they told me I didn't pass security. I told them my old address and they still said I didn't pass. I asked why and was told they couldn't tell me. If I don't know what's wrong, how can I correct it?? I'm clearly appointed as I can see their details online! Gave up, called back, gave the old address and passed security.

Image is of a pin up style woman in a red dress with some of her skirt caught in the filing cabinet. She looks surprised.

Thanks for the heads up. The flaws in their systems never cease to surprise me. I shouldn't be surprised, but then they manage to pull something uterly ludicrous out of the bag.
