HMRC's latest annyong habit

New VAT points and penalty notices

Didn't find your answer?

Anyone had any of these yet?

The don't contain a client name, only a client VAT registration number!

How useless are these guys? Honestly!

Just when you think HMRC are this useless, they find a way to prove they are that useless instead.

I know it's a low bar, but I suppose it is better than nothing?

It is annoying, apparently to do with preventing fraud I am told, but don't understand where the fraud risk is?

I mean, any letter received in the post is a potential fraud risk but the banks manage to send you a new credit card without too much fuss.

You may recall when we had the new Agent Services Account (replacing the old agent login), we were no longer able to search by client name we had to use VAT number to find our client, so I think the whole system has been built from the ground up using numbers, not names, which is utterly useless unless you are Rain Man.

How is this any more of a risk than sending out SA or CT mail with the client name on it?

I think fraud is an excuse and they have (as usual) just developed an awful system.

There is no fraud risk saving given you can look up and VAT number to find the company on the public database

It's just really bad document specification.

Yes, got one of these addressed to us which made me do a double take until I checked the VAT number as we always file on time

That seems to be the way HMRC are choosing to deal with us now, the ASA does not list clients by name so every time you want to use it you have to hunt out the VAT number or the NI number for the income tax viewer.

Who in their right mind would design a system like that unless they wanted to deliberately make it more difficult and time consuming to use?

Yes, very annoying. I was grateful for the search function on my practice management software!
