Is it just us or the more automated HMRC get the worse the 'service'?!
Today, we received a tax calculation for 2016/17 for a client who died the previous tax year chasing tax on a charitable donation (which clearly they didn't make!) as there was no income or tax paid in the year. The SATR to date of death went in as did a letter confirming the death etc and all acknowledged by HMRC. The widow gets a copy 'of this assessment' too but no apology offered!
Yesterday, we received a 2016/17 tax calculation chasing for class 2 not due as self employment ceased as stated on SATR. Tax and NI systems don't align and departments don't seem to communicate as we ended up being passed from SATR to NI as we needed to tell them albeit the cessation date was clearly on the Return.
Doubt any of this is worth doing a complaint for but as we are a small Tax Agent just wondered if anyone else is experiencing this sort of thing and what they are doing about it?

Do you not realise that we are supposed to do HMRC's job for them, now (unpaid, of course) to ensure that it's done correctly?
Of course it will, because advisors are not a prominent part of MTD, and so HMRC will hope we'll go away and they can take whatever the hell the feel like from the poor taxpayer.
"Al this will be a thing of the past when MTD kicks in."
I actualy hurt myself rolling about the floor laughing at this.
Thanks - you made my day.
We are small too. We also get the odd stupid letter that does not align with the online data or ours. Online data does not correlate to anything done or paid.
I just ignore the letter, calm the client down and nothing happens. It just all goes away without me doing anything.
letter probably an auto one from a feisty feeling computer.
Mind you its the easy stuff MTD will do like pay, PAYE, NI class 2 and 4 etc. etc.
So onwards to MTD and to see the spectacular crash that will occur.
It is the worst it's ever been. The systems are bug ridden, the staf disparate and cannot interact with each other or understand overlaps and there is no alignment. When things go wrong, they really go wrong.
HMRC calculation telling us our submitted tax calculation was wrong, when it was exactly the same as that submitted.
Registering a new Trust or new Estate on line, don't even go there!
