How do we check completeness of SEISS received?

How do we ensure correct SEISS amounts have been provided by clients,to fill in the Tax Return 2021?

Didn't find your answer?

SEISS are to be taxed on receipt basis. Clients may give us the information. Sometimes this may not be the correct amount. Where such errors occur, for example in State Pension, we are able to cross check the numbers on HMRC's portal, " Information to help you complete your tax return". Similar errors can happen for SEISS. One way is to review the bank statements  where the Accounting Year is not same as the Tax Year or review the bank transactions on cloud Accounting software with bank feeds . I was wondering if readers may know any other way to cross check. Thank you in advance for your time and suggestions.

Shortland.

We can't yet. I think I read earlier that HMRC is working on giving us access, potentially in the 'useful information for your tax return' section but we have to rely on the client for now.

We are making this explicit in our sign off letters, that they confirm that the amount in box relevant box in the tax return is correct.

In my view clients who managed to set up a GG account are perfectly capable of providing 3 numbers which enabled them to survive last year.

Client's obligation at the end of the dayh.

Just make sure you specifically say so.

Trivial figures but on the one that was so desperate I confirmed by just calculating it myself
He had added up correctly but told me they were all 80%
Faster than getting the bank statements

I extracted the projected amounts from Taxfiler last year and contacted all eligible clients. I just checked and the number provided by a client for SEISS 1 agrees to the Taxfiler download.

I recalculate it myself to make sure the client is giving me the right figure.

How do you know they claimed all the grants?

I ask them for the amounts claimed for the grants, then I ask them if they're sure those are the correct amounts, then I put them on the return and get them to sign it.

I realise you may not want your clients to be tempted into completing their own tax returns, but if you get them to log into their Gateway (which they must know to have claimed!) then following the links to complete 2021 SATR the first thing that pops up is how much SEISS they had! Get them to send you a print/screenshot?

Looks like this (this is me - I don't have client's private logins and I've changed the amount!):

Hazel xxxx's tax return: 2020-21

To help you complete your return we have shown below information which we hold.

Our records show you have received Self-Employment Income Support Scheme grant(s). This is taxable income and you must enter these payments in the new SEISS boxes in the relevant sections of this return.

Excellent suggestion.
My favourite bit in all that is the final line before actual amount(s) ... "Has Viewed Information"
Maybe HMRC are finally catching up with basic technology ... in this case tracking what's been viewed (so that later they can 'prove' a wrongly entered or missing figure was deliberate)?

There is actually a tick box that wouldn't copy and paste. I'd guess (but didn't want to try at the mo) it won't let you go forwards to complete the SATR return until you tick it!
