I have a client SAGE file on a stick but no other SAGE software. How do I access this file for free?

I don't think there is a way to read the data without access to Sage software. Could you get the client to run an activity report for all nominal codes and send as either a pdf or spreadsheet?
Presumably, the client has the SAGE software (whatever it is) running on their PC? Why not set up some form of remote access to it then you will be able to access the data for free.
I had one like this a couple of years ago - a client had a new version of sage and my copy was a couple of years old, so couldn't open the file. I'm almost certain that there is no way to read the data other than using sage. I believe sage instant used to be enough to be able to read sage 50 data.
What it did was to call sage and register a monthly account, the bare minimum, ie 1 user only. They charged around £20-30 per month but I cancelled it after the first month, having extracted the data I needed, but, that was a client who I was converting to Xero, so only needed to access sage as a one time event.
I think you need to either bite the bullet and subscribe for a sage license or do as suggested above and set up a remote access to the client's pc / or download reports on site.
If by "Sage file" you mean a Sage backup, then you'll need a full Sage installation to restore the backup to and then access the data. If, however, you have the ACCDATA folder, and all the files it contains, on the stick then all you need is an ODBC connection for the correct version of Sage.
