How to change CT tax period?

Corporation tax period does not match companies house, how do I make them match.

Didn't find your answer?

Registered company May 22nd 2022, didnt start trading until mid Nov 2022, So I thought I would make it nice and neat by changing the accounting period on HMRC to end Oct 31st 2022. For which I filed dormant acocunts (May 22nd 2022 - Oct 31st 2022).

I thought that was it. Now I got a message from HMRC in regards to the corporation tax return for period (May 22nd 2022 - May 21st 2023). Tried to do it for period May 22nd 2022 - Oct 31st 2022 using their online platform but it dosent let me as the dates dont match . What do I do? I read online that the reason it didnt update the period for corporation tax was due to the dormant company return on companie house, so I was thinking to go and amend my company accounts to enter income of £10 and expense of £10, so then it dosent show as dormant, would this work to update corporation tax period with HMRC? If not how do I go about updating?

If the company was dormant until mid Nov 22 then strictly no return is required for that period. However, due to HMRC's incompetence and delays, I would probably just go ahead and file a nil return for the period x May 22 to y Nov 22. And then a return for the first active period y+1 Nov 22 to 31 Oct 23. HMRC's records should then automatically update. No need to change anything else accounts-wise.

EDIT: just read your post properly and note that you are trying to use HMRC's own Mickey Mouse filing facility. Since most people here are tax agents they cannot use HMRC's software and so there is a good chance that you will have to wait some time for a solution (other than to invest in tax filing software - you can get some that does the basics for not much outlay).

Can you please recommend me a tax filing software that will allow me to change the CT dates. Rather just invest now and get it over and done with then wait around for a HMRC solution.

I can't recommend any, as we use one of the more expensive products. I am just aware that there are other, less expensive, options out there. Hopefully others will point you in the right direction.

I would do one of the following:
1. Write to HMRC advising of dormant status for the period in question. They should be able to remove the issue of a CT return for the dormant period.
2. Call HMRC, explain the year-end has been changed. They can amend the period for which they are expecting a return.

Never submitted using their filing facility. When I have called a la Option 2 above, I have been able to see the updated periods when logging into to our agent account, so I assume this will also work when a company logs into their own.
