How to de-register for VAT

I'm trying to de-register a client for VAT

Didn't find your answer?

I've tried doing the usual de-register thing, but it just logs me out, a bit like trying to file a non-MTD VAT return, and so I log back in to my ASA account and it just says agents can not use that service. Anybody got ideas on how to de-register in the new fantastic MTD world ?

Seems to be an option in the client's Business Tax account:-

Cancel VAT registration
Cancel your VAT registration if you’re closing the business, transferring ownership or do not need to be VAT registered.

Pretty sure you can do this via your agent services account under the "Making Tax Digital for VAT" section then "Manage your client’s VAT details". Enter their VAT number then under "Manage VAT" you'll hopefully see "Cancel VAT registration. Cancel your client’s VAT registration if you’re closing the business, transferring ownership or do not need to be VAT registered."

I only have the one client (the first one) in my agent services account and spoken to the VAT office 3 times and none of them could advise on how to get the rest of the clients in there. Just tried calling twice more today and was told we now have to do a VAT7 and post it to de-register. Which sounds ridiculously wrong, but I've done it anyway.

It might be correct. Is the client a VAT group rather than a signle entity?

No, just a sole trader. I am officially giving up on the 'agent services account' I have no intention of looking at it again. Everything is back to paper forms to Grimsby. And CWF1 and SA1 forms are also going in the post. And 64-8s too. They forgot to add the box 'send SA statements to agents' when doing it online. So we can only get the statements sent to us to check if we call them up, and that music has driven me up the wall today.

We'll be back to SA tax returns in the post soon if they carry on mucking things up like this.

Why would you want the statements sent to you?
I never have and never will
Agent portal gives all you need, including statements
Paper 64-8 is a complete misery of delay compared to the usual system
