How to find my LLP's UTR number

HMRC say we are none existent.

Didn't find your answer?

We run a LLP business and in October last year we were about to do our accounts, when we realised, we cannot find out UTR number. Since then, we have called HMRC, on several occasions and we have been told various different things. (Some of the reasons given by HMRC, They would send it out to us, nothing received, complete an obsolete form (AS400)).HMRC claims we do not exist; however, companies house say we do exist. We have written a letter to HMRC. Can anyone advise us on how we can obtain a UTR number, although we have been trying since October and spent 4 hours over the last two- and a-bit months on the phone to HMRC. All we know they will still fine us for not submitting on time.

Who is doing the accounts? Your accountant or you? What I would do in this situation depends on whether I was an internal accountant or in practice.

I have an external accountant, however I registered the business, he is as confused with HMRC's responses.

Any proper accountant in practice should be able to deal with this. I've many times been in situations like this. If your current accountant can't sort it out, you should consider changing him rather than trying to do it yourself.

True for a company. But you're an LLP. It may well be the same but I couldn't be sure.

Have you tried asking HMRC for a temporary UTR number?

@ Shogun2020 (OP).

Here is a previous similar thread on AWEB:-

https://www.accountingweb.co.uk/any-answers/new-llp-lost-utr

Frankly, your accountant should be able to resolve this matter for you.

If you phone HMRC again, ask for a Technical Officer (as recommended by one of the responses in the earlier AWEB thread, as above).

Re Penalties, if you are unfortunate to receive any Penalty Notices, your accountant should be able to have them cancelled without difficulty.

Basil.
