How to get tax return signed for client in prison

How do I get tax return signed for client in prison?

Didn't find your answer?

I’m preparing a tax return for a client who has recently been sent to prison. His mother has provided all the information for the return. How do I get his tax return signed/authorised? I believe due to Coronavirus prison visits aren’t allowed at the moment. Can his mother sign on his behalf? Does she need power of attorney?

Never had this situation before…

I'm no expert but the last one I did someone else had PoA, I thought it was normal so their financial affairs can be kept in order?

Thanks, makes sense. I've not asked the question about PoA yet. His mum is very sensitive and upset about the whole situation so I just need to get my understanding right before I go back to her.

How would mother (or anyone else) get PoA in present circumstances? Can your client's defence lawyer advise?

It might be worth getting in touch with https://insidetime.org/tax-refunds-and-planning-for-prisoners/ ?
I don't know anything about them, but this appears to be their raison d'être.

You could post the return to them - but correspondence will be opened & read by prison staff before being passed to the prisoner.

Are prisoners allowed email?
All that is really needed is authority for filing.

Yes, through ‘email a prisoner’. Transmits daily rather than instantly but very good.

How long is the sentence? If it's not too much over 14 months, he may well be out on licence (mid-sentence) before 31 January.

I wouldn't have thought it'd be a problem for you to get it in to the prison through your contacts, Tony S.

I once went to Ford open and had someone sign. Check with the prison. I think they are allowed mail. so just post it ... BUT include an SAE!
