How to prove you have ceased trading?

Proof that you are no longer self-emplyed

Didn't find your answer?

I have been operating as a sole-trader for the past four years, but now looking to go back to full time education. I have filled the stop being self-employed form online, however have not received any notifications from HMRC/Gov.uk. I need this to prove that I will no longer be making an income for scholarship purposes, but not sure how to get this officially. Any help would be much appreciated.

A copy of your tax return showing the date of cessation?

Who do you need to prove this to?

If an organisation is asking you to prove that you have no income then you are probably faced with an impossible task. Any confirmation of your cessation date from HMRC will be meaningless, as it will only confirm what you have told them, which is not proof at all.

What cessation date did you give and what date does your potential course start?
What will you be doing in the meantime?

How long ago did you fill the form out ? HMRC moves as slow as Jeremy on producing a change of direction

It seems a little odd that the student loan company (I'm guessing it's them) want proof. There's not much you can do. Write/phone HMRC and ask them to confirm what their record shows. You might have a wait - but keep badgering them and make a nuisance of yourself if it takes too long. Escalate your request to a higher level if you're really stuck.

Despite other comments, the fact that it's only based on information provided by you is entirely irrelevant. It provides some sense of security to the organisation concerned. They ought it take your statement at face value - they can't simply assume everyone is lying unless they can prove otherwise.

Surely the Student Loan Company does not offer scholarships?

No, it's usually universities, colleges and the like - does that help?

Why the questions? The OP is anonymous and cannot answer without suffering the humiliation of outing themselves.
