How was Accountex for you?

Was anyone else harassed?

Having taken care to check in with a bogus identity and bin the badge, in order to avoid the avalanche of emails and phone calls that followed the last experience, I was pursued around the exhibition by young chaps in T shirts diving off stands to step into my path, asking "how are you?", "let's demonstrate our software!". I tried everything from "I'm not an accountant" to I'm getting angry" all to no avail. Are these guys driven by mystery shopping threats or are they on something? I counted more than 40 accostings before I left in desperation.

Yes, to be fair that's not really the best descriptor is it

If you didn't want to talk to the exhibitors, why did you go at all? You sound a bit like a person that went to the cinema for a nap, and was annoyed that someone disturbed you by playing a film.

I can understand not wanting to hand over the e-mail. The post conference contacts can get very pushy. But I really don't understand not wanting to engage at all.

No problems. Only engaged with those I wanted to speak to. Struck by the lack of business around both the Taxfiler and, more especially, the Iris stands following the latest revelations.
One positive was coming away with a free cactus!!

Taxfilers growth will come to a standstill now until people know what Iris intend to do with it

Not if the number of people I saw coming away from their stand clutching brochures is any indication. It was busy every time I went past it on Wednesday (I finally managed to get close enough to snaffle a mug). IRIS must know what they are doing TaxFiler is probably unstoppable now. I can't understand why people are saying their stand was empty - perhaps the show was less busy on Thursday?

I have also seen posts saying TaxCalc were very busy. I thought so too at first (they were right opposite TaxFiler) but then I realised that most of the people on their stand were their own staff. I chuckled when I read the Aweb post the next morning that said the TaxCalc support lines were not open because all their people were at Accountex.

I didn't find it too bad this year. Possibly cos GDPR (ie they properly need formal opt in they can evidence, rather than just "stealing" my email address from somewhere). Possibly cos I went on second day, and the enthusiasm of people on trade stands was diminished (and/or they were hungover!).

Whether I got anything particularly useful from it is another matter. It was good to chat with some of our existing suppliers (particularly Senta, but also a catch up with some FreeAgent bods). A couple of the seminars were interesting (even if not something we can really do anything with...eg hearing about future of open banking/PSD2, and blockchain).

Definitely glad I went, but nothing ground breaking for us.

I enjoyed talking to the wide boy 'specialist' consultant (I wont out them by naming their speciality) who tried to distance himself from the cowboys amongst his niche whilst demonstrating the stereotype perfectly.

I was disappointed by how lacking the freebies were (both in terms of quantity and quality).

I thought it was great. Stocked up on water bottles, stress balls, chocolates which I ate throughout the day and of course pens!! Who doesn’t love a good pen? I even had a sneaky Pims at Quickbooks.
There were the usual 'How are you today?’ approaches from eager exhibitors but I simply replied good, smiled and walked on. I didn’t find it a problem and my overall impression of the two days was very positive. There was a really nice vibe this year.
It is a free event, you can get free CPD hours and access to some great speakers. It’s a pretty fair exchange IMHO and I do think it’s very well run.
