I was employed until sept18 then self employed

I earnt more money being employed in 18/19 than I did being self employed. Can I get any SA grants?

Didn't find your answer?

Due to the rule saying if less than half of your income was through self assessment I don't think I am eligible for self assessment grants. Also that first 6 months I was starting a new business (in the building trade) so my income was low for that year. I have since earnt about 500 a week for all of 19/20.

I understand hmrc cant take 19/20 figures to avoid fraud and due to not having time to process millions of tax returns before dealing with millions of claims but it looks like i wont get anything at the minute when I am genuinely without work. Do you think at a later date, after the mad rush of claims, hmrc will look at such cases on an individual basis ?

Further clarification is needed to say for sure.

The criteria of more than 50% of income is for those who are employed and self employed at the same time.

Presumably the tax return you have already submitted shows that your employment ended during that year and your self employment then started. They have said that they will assess those who have started trading in that time so I would hope you (and many others in the same position) will qualify, but we need HMRC to release more details to see for sure.

Either way, you are entitled to apply for benefits so I'd suggest you look at that in the meantime
