Import VAT - own goods and equipment

Didn't find your answer?

Afternoon all,

We have recently received an invoice from DHL for payment of VAT due to the import of a tool kit from Norway. The tool kit is owned by us and is used by the engineers for repairs on machinery.

The tool kit was sent out from our office in the UK by a freight company to Oslo purely due to the weight of the kit and to avoid the engineer having to carry it as extra luggage.

Question 1 - normally we recover the import VAT on our VAT return so should this be recovered as input VAT in the same way?

Question 2 - as we already own these goods (and so not a purchase) I believe there should be no import VAT as we have documentary evidence of both export to Norway and also evidence of the goods were purchased tax paid (previous import and VAT paid)

I believe it is simple a matter of going back to DHL with the documentary evidence to show export or previous import so that the VAT is waivered

Look forward to hearing your thoughts

Good luck with getting DHL to update anything.
Head <-> wall <-> bang.
Expect your queries to go completely unanswered whilst they ramp up the enforcement process with increasing threats and charges.
Let us know how you get on (genuine interest).
