Information retention?

With the new gdpr rules looming how long must an accountant keep information for former clients?

Money laundering rules state records must be kept for 5 years and hmrc have the previous 6 year rule but I heard recently mention of a 12 year retention period. One aspect of new gdpr is data destruction so how long must we keep tax returns, working papers etc for clients that have stopped trading or moved to another agent?

Now that GDPR is upon us, it would interesting to know what the general experience has been regarding the destruction of client working papers in the run up to 25 May 2018, and are we all agreed that working papers should now only be kept for 6 years ?
