International VAT Query

Service Rendered - Website Design and continued Maintainence

Didn't find your answer?

Hi All,

I appreciate this question may have already been covered in previous queries, but the type of service rendered may not have.

We are a UK Business and had our website built from scratch by a South African Company, which also continues to maintain and upgrade it for us. Our Accountant has recently explained that we should not have been charged VAT by the South African Company, which started at 14% originally and most recently 15%, since the Government imposed increase.

Is my accountant correct in saying we should not be charged VAT?

Assuming South African VAT rules mirror UK/EU rules (dare you assume anything?) then you should not be charged VAT. How can you check the equivalent SA rules?

Thanks for your response Les,

This is it, the publication of content via gov.uk in relation to South African trade correlates more to Exports, imports etc.

I cant seem to find anything pertaining to a service rendered from South Africa to us here in the UK.

You’ll need to find the SA equivalent of HMRC and look at their rulebook /website.
