I complete a few tax returns each year amd was wondering if the cost if IRIS is excessive for just a hand full of tax returns? Also I am a soletrader so need to know if submitting accounts/personal tax returms is possible?

Xero now offer personal tax returns and company tax returns if you set up as an accountant with them, and I think it's free of charge. But you'd have to have clients on Xero as well. As long as your tax returns were quite simple it would be worth a go.
I'm a big fan of Taxfiler, which is a reasonable price if you've got more than a handful of tax clients. And their offering is bound to be better than anything you can get for free.

Surely that depends on your practice licence.
If you don't fancy the HMRC offering then look at TopUpTax - £5 a return but you have to buy in blocks of 5 (ie min payment of £25 plus VAT)
Do you have practicing certificate with the main bodies?
if not don't overlook the need to be registered with HMRC for money laundering.
Part time practices doing 5 returns a year don't really work anymore. Overheads are too high.
