Afternoon folks!
Well, it's been a slightly manic 48 hours hasn't it? With over 50 resignations (and one firing - sorry, Gove) the Johnson era of priministerial politics is drawing to a close.
Now we look towards who is most likely to take on the driver's seat of the conservative party, and there are a few fellow accountants in the running for some of the top jobs.
With Liz Truss, as well as previous chancellors in the running for the most senior roles of government, could we be seeing a new accountant-centric dawn in the Tory party, and how do you think it could affect future policy? (cough-MTD-cough)
Also, could we see the return of other accounting MPs such as Alok Sharma in the coming weeks and months? Maybe Therese Coffey, another practitioner-turned-politician could become a bigger name as we edge towards the new government.
Have a great rest of the week everyone and see you on the other side

I have thrown my hat into the ring:
As chancellor I would:
1. Ban all narrowboats over forty one feet in length from Britain's canal network.
2. Repeal IR35 except for media personalities (working on that one...)
3. Scrap MTDITSA (Hooray I hear you shout!)
4. Replace it with paper tax returns.
5. Scrap HS2
6. Build HS3,4 & 5 instead
7. Scrap the iniquitous beer tax
8. Make clapping for the NHS compulsory at 8:00pm every day.
9. Have a 'love your accountant' bank holiday in October
and 10.....combine the Inland Revenue and HM Customs and excise ! (how difficult can that be?)
Brilliant
Add
11. Rename the money that HMRC takes from people to prove that the UK has the lowest tax rates for a decade
I forgot to say: "Ban HMRC from calling taxpayers 'customers'
Actually that would be policy 1,2,3,4,...etc etc
Why "Love your Accountant" in October, would not instead a week of rejoicing in February be better, and all non accountants buy all the drinks and the accountants drink for free for the week. (Even retired accountants)
Would any sensible person, let alone an accountant, look to be the stand in captain on the half sunk ship.
Tory MPs have killed all trust, faith, judgement, loyalty, and accountability.
They have no potential leader with any personality or charisma
This will be a rerun of of the Theresa May decline. I pity the poor stand in winner.
That person gets to be PM until the next election, but that is about it.
The Boris landslide was a popularity vote for Boris alone.
We will not see the like of that election again
Jacob Rees-Mogg is the closest with intellect and distinct charisma, but his top hat will stay firmly on his head.
The average voter would struggle to name more than four faces on a photo of the current cabinet.
People who failed dismally or made no mark in their chosen career, choose an easier ‘career’ and fail dismally at that too, you mean?!
Maybe we will get a dull grey PM like John Major? (although we did later find out he wasn't quite as dull as he made out).
A little known fact is that in 1992, when Major led the Conservatives to a surprise election win, the Conservatives got over 14m votes - still the record for votes cast for a single party in a UK election (and 127k more than Boris in 2019).
I happened to be outside Downing Street on the day Theresa May was appointed as PM. Whilst waiting for her arrival, I announced my manifesto to the waiting tourists and police officers. It's quite short:
"Free beer and cake to everyone"
It was well received by everyone and someone even said they would vote for me. I admit I have not fully costed my proposal but I gather no political party does a serious job of that any more. Of course, it stands to reason that MTD would be scrapped as would other hair-brained HMRC regimes such as 30/60-day CGT. I quite like memyself-eye's "love your accountant" October bank holiday but ask why it should be restricted to just one month of the year: let's have it throughout the other 11 too.

I'm sure every employer is saying "Oh aye, great idea."
Wot - every month?
Let's be reasonable, October is the month where there are no Bank Holidays (or either side)
I was going to suggest a 'battle of Trafalger ' holiday but that would upset the French.
Actually, we've been upsetting the French for centuries, why stop now!
A general point to watch as we get closer to a General Election
Beware the Blair coming out of his lair
