Is MTD now voluntary?

MTD Update for Agents latest reminder

Didn't find your answer?

I'm sure everyone else must have seen this already .....

Just by way of reminder:

If you have clients that pay by Direct Debit the sign up window has closed for the 7 August. Do not worry we won’t penalise them this time so file the old way and come back when the DD has been collected to sign up in time to file the next return. Although we will not penalise them they will receive a letter from us telling them that they missed the deadline and asking them to take action.

Dosen't this sound nice and friendly - perhaps none of us needed to bother with the MTD sign up!

This is all about the soft landing and the fact that there are no penalties as yet.

This is also not news. It has been the case for some time that there were to be no penalties for a while. Probably no penalties in 2019.

My guess is that so many have missed the 'obligatory' sign up date that those nice folks at HMRC would be overwhelmed with punishing them all - what with No deal Brexit and all......

I've still got clients who do their own vat and don't know what I'm talking about when I try to explain the MTD requirements. They've said they'll wait till HMRC tell them they have to!

I have 25 clients Ive tried to help and they all come back saying they have tried and failed. For many they either won't comply or ( if forced) will file incorrect returns even if they use an Accountant. HMRC have spent a lot of money on this and it appears rather than lose face would prefer incorrect VAT returns being filed through software no one understands. Looking at the average comment on Aweb Accountants have had enough. That will not help HMRC !
