Hello everyone,
I have recently taken on two new clients for VAT - both are not yet registered for Making Tax Digital for VAT.
Each client has supplied to me their VAT registration certificate, showing the VAT number, date of registration and address.
Both have also supplied a copy of the latest VAT return submitted.
But, for each of them, when I try to request authorisation online, the HMRC system says ERROR: HM Revenue & Customs is unable to identify your client from the information you have provided. Please check the details you have entered and amend if necessary.
But I know the information IS correct.
Has anyone else experienced this issue, or have any ideas what I can do?
I am guessing an old style, paper 64-8 may work but probably will not give me VAT online access?
Thanks in advance.

You could try and enter the box 6 figure from the return prior to them moving into the new system.
Box 5 you meant - problem is if they arent mtd that will the last return submitted.
Op are you sure they arent mtd ? if they are mtd and you dont know it it will be last box 5 pre mtd
They should be able to add you via their gateway using your agent identified.
Only other thing i can think is that if their address details are wrong and account could be blocked?
Other than that treble check all the info
Is the vat cert a new online one or old paper one that could have old address
fresh browser?
are hmrc online services [***] you over by not playing ball - could be
But non MTD clients have been moved to a new system so I don’t see why the same trick couldn’t be tried as for MTD clients which is using the last VAT return figure before the move.
Matrix is correct.
It is the last vat return prior to moving to ASA. From the client's point of view they don't see significant difference when they've been moved whereas agents have to login via ASA to file those that have been moved but not mtd enrolled.
I suggest asking for the last 3 or 4 returns and trying the box 5 figure from all of them.
