Jubilee blues?

Did you manage to get some time to celebrate?

Didn't find your answer?

Afternoon everyone!

Happy belated Jubilee, especially if you were able to get all four days away from the office!

Now that the bunting has come down and the leftover party cake is tightly tupperwared' in the fridge, how has it been getting back into the swing of it today? Are you catching up from the week before or are you sitting pretty with a relatively quiet start to the week?

Whatever the case, I hope you all managed to have a lovely time this jubilee weekend.

Dont put cake in the fridge. Unless it has fresh cream in or on it.

Who has leftover cake anyway?

Can you be less depressing with your post title?

I'm not anti-Royal or an ardent Republican, but how much better would it have been if the Queen (who I think does a great job - especially given her pretty dreadful family) asked for all the money spent on the Jubilee to instead go to some good charities. (Maybe she could have piggybacked on the Notting Hill carnival and various local fetes etc.)

I wanted them to have "The Queen's Bet", all households getting a free £1 bet on the nags.

Frankly whilst I have no problem with the royal family I can think of better things to do than watch them on the box, their relevance to my family over the years is limited to:

1. My grandmother was a pastry cook at St James' Palace , sometime before 1919 as by then she was out in Gibraltar cooking for the governor and then getting married, so she worked for The Firm for a few years. (Not much use to me as her brilliant steak and kidney pudding could never be copied as she never measured ingredients so the quantities were never given)

2. My grandfather met George V when he was awarded an MBE (Military) in the 1930s. (I have inherited his invite card plus the newspaper with the honours list etc in his papers)

3. My Dad had a pint with Prince Philip at Claverhouse, the RNR depot in Edinburgh, apparently the Queen was here sometime in the 60s and Phillip was surplus to requirements so visited the officers' mess and stood a round (not that he actually paid as my father, who was Commander (S )at the time, never sent the palace the bill.)

That is it, I am sure they are in the main pleasant enough but not really that important to my life.

Jubilee? Did I miss something?
Mind you she's never offered to help me celebrate anything!

Not fussed about the Queen but I ate a lot of cake and rather over enjoyed my local pub.

I also traded cake as there was excess cake everywhere we went. More invites in one weekend than the previous 2 months I reckon. Wife made 3 massive chocolate cakes. We now have 1/4 very nice fruit cake which will keep, a sizeable chunk of gin cake as most people were driving and half a chocolate cake which needs eating up (shame) and a random stack of brownies and short breads. None of them in the fridge. I manged to mainly exchange cakes the kids don't like or it would all be scoffed by now.

It was brilliant - no holidays in France but all of the UK based clients were off so we had some catch up days!

Caught the concert but wasn't particularly bothered with doing anything else.

I wouldn't celebrate the royal family if they were the last family on earth.

I simply avoided it like the plague.

Yes, my opinion is off with their heads.
Although as I think that's not very kind I'd let them leave quietly.

Have you seriously considered the alternative?

Once you have an election for a head of state you tend to grant an executive function which stakes a claim towards governing by the fact he/she is elected. A non elected party ,as we have, with no executive powers, leaves power firmly at Westminster.

Whilst the idea of a hereditary figurehead may stick in the craw the idea of a Trumpesque individual with real powers frightens the **** out of me.

I watched the concert on TV. I enjoyed it. There were no street parties locally and I wouldn't have taken part anyway. I remember there were loads in 1977 when I was a kid, and did take part. Not taking part now is not because I'm anti-royal, it's because I'm a grumpy middle-aged accountant. I spent most of my time in the office to catch up when the phones (and emails) are quiet.

Jubilee blues is perhaps the most ridiculous thing I have read since 'Platty Jubes'.
