Just Eat and VAT

Can I reclaim VAT on the food ordered?

Didn't find your answer?

Some of our employees have started using the likes of Just Eat when they are travelling.  There is no VAT information on the receipts.  Can I reclaim the VAT on the food as I assume that the price that the restaurant is charging includes VAT but it just isn't shown on the Just Eat receipt?

How do you know the entity is registered for VAT ?

You are correct, I don't. I suppose I could ring and check if I can find their details.

I just wondered what other people were doing as I assume my employees are not the only ones using these delivery services.

I'm not correct - I'm just asking.

I suppose the answer to your question is, if you have a less detailed tax invoice, you can claim. If not, you can't.

I don't have any clients with this type of expenditure.

There is also a thread about this on our sister site UK Business Forums:

Thanks Tom.

I have just seen that Deliveroo will send VAT receipts:

So I will ask my employees to use them instead.

You're not talking about this ongoing matter where a company that has no motor vehicles is being claimed to provide taxi service are you Tom?

Yes, but now I'm wondering if the Deliveroo VAT receipts will show the VAT on the actual food or if it will just be the VAT on their sevice charge.

I have never used any of these companies personally, so cannot ask them for VAT receipts to find out.

Well there's only 1 way to find out, and that's dinner sorted at the same time.

In case anyone is interested, I got one of our employees to ask Deliveroo for a VAT invoice for an old order.

The invoice only showed VAT on the Deliveroo charges and showed the VAT to be zero on the actual food.

However, there is a section at the bottom of the invoice where there is space to show the VAT registration number of the restaurant as well as the restaurant net, VAT and gross figures.

So hopefully, if a restaurant is VAT registered, then the details will be there and I will be able to reclaim the VAT.

However, I am not sure if this will be the case as one of the invoices was for food from Burger Burger @ Frankie & Benny's. I would have thougth that they would have to come under the F&B's VAT registration. Unless they are simply using their kitchen.

Ok, so I asked the employee to go back as far as he could and he sent me one for Gourmet Burger Kitchen which had a restaurant VAT number and showed the VAT on the food.

So Deliveroo have got their act together.

I will ask our employees to only use Deliveroo in future.

What for Deliveroo? No, it isn't. It was a genuine question, just like the one I asked about Hotels.com a few months ago when I had the same issue about us not being able reclaim VAT on hotel bookings.
