Just so I'm clear...

I'm stuck in a loop!

Didn't find your answer?

So I have a new VAT client. I want to add them to my client list on the HMRC site.

I can't as they aren't signed up for MTD.

I can't sign them up for MTD as they aren't a client.

Apparently the client has to sign up for MTD themselves, but if they were a client on the HMRC site I could sign them up.

The client is old and doesn't own a computer, hence why we are doing the electronic bookkeeping and VAT for him going forwards.

I assume I will have to get him in to sit with me and set up an account he then won't be able to access.

This is silly.

You can still request agent authorisation through the old agent log in.

The one with the letter in the post to your client with the security code in it.

Good point, I'll call that plan B!

Or your client can apply for exemption from MTD for VAT on the grounds of age - https://www.gov.uk/guidance/apply-for-an-exemption-from-making-tax-digit....

But then our software won't let us submit on their behalf, it'd be even more of a faff to keep doing paper returns in this instance.

I'd avoid clients like that..unless you're like a freebie citizens advice bureau .

Well he and his family have been clients since I think before I was born, so I think my employer is happy to be a little inconvenienced for him :)

Especially as once we have mantled (or is it mantle'd) this HMRC imposed bump it will be a 5 minute job each quarter to submit for him.

I spent over 5 hours last month on long phone calls to try and move a client to vat MTD. Turned out he’d already been transferred over earlier as he’d unwittingly clicked on a link in his Govt Gateway and gone through the process without realising.
Plus somehow he showed up on our TaxFiler system without him actively authorising us.
And this client is a bit of a technical wizard who builds stuff that go in warships so it’s a bit worrying that he was baffled by the HMRC systems.

It's potentially even more worrying if the "stuff" he builds to go in warships involves missile-guidance! :~(

He’s not allowed to tell me exactly what he does; all I see in the workshop are various-sized metal boxes painted battleship grey. Echoes of Airfix models spring to mind.

Did he help to design Making Tanks Digital for the Russians?

Oh just set up a Gateway A/c for him (keep id & p/w) & then apply for MTD. You need his VAT No, Company Reg. No & the company;s UTR. Takes approx. 10 mins if that!
